There is something most attractive about a building which wholly built of local sandstone, and there are several such examples scattered about the district of St. George which are worthy of record.
It is unfortunate that it has proved difficult to date these charming residences, churches and inns with any degree of certainty, but when all is said and done, this matter is of no great importance, it is their design and execution that really brings forth their charm.
Surprisingly enough stone-built houses are widely dispersed, perhaps the greatest number being constructed by stonemasons living in certain areas, such as Arncliffe, Rockdale and Peakhurst.
It is delightful to note the range of colours which are to be seen, from pure white, to an enchanting shade of yellow, and some are rosy pink, and others streaked with pastel shades brought about by intrusions of iron-stone, all of which are most pleasing to the discerning eye.
