Description

The St George Sailing Club, established on Botany Bay in 1897, has produced its own array of champions during its one hundred and twenty-five years of activity.

Various classes have raced through the unfolding seasons. Some emphasis has been placed on the dominant class – the 16-foot skiffs. They had been racing prior to World War One, but, became all-pervasive in the early 1920s. In 2022 they remain the senior class at the club.

The history of the 16s, and before them the 14 footers, are discussed.

There is one deliberate deviation from this plan. In Chapter Four, discussion turns to a man who has been described as ‘the greatest open boat sailor of all time’ – ‘Billo’ Hayward.

Although ‘Billo’ has a chapter to himself, that chapter could easily have expanded into a whole book. Perhaps one day it will.

Chapters five to eight take up the yearly chronology pattern, continuing up to and including, the 2022 season.

From Chapter Nine the book looks at the various classes embraced by the club with the earliest beginning in the 1940s. These include, V Js, MGs, Skates, Gwenl2s, Cherubs, Flying Ants, Moths, and Sailboards. Each has a devoted chapter.

Finally, a chapter is given to the demolition of the old, and the building of the new, clubhouse.

Length: 324 pages.
