Description
The early settlers of the St. George District established, along with their homes and farms, places of worship which proved to be the focal point of the community. It was in these humble buildings that the spiritual, social and educational needs of the then small, but growing communities, were met.
All ten churches recorded within this booklet, had their origins in the mid-late 1800’s – in the days of vast parishes, little or no transport and clergymen of all denominations traversed great distances by foot in caring for the members of their congregations.
This booklet is not a comprehensive history of all the churches of the St. George District. It has been produced to provide a concise, written record of the humble beginnings of the various denominations and to preserve such a record for the present and future generations. It is a tangible tribute to the founding fathers of the St. George District, and we who build on the foundations laid, record our gratitude.
