Thomas Saywell’s Tramway 1887 – 1914: Rockdale to Lady Robinson’s Beach by Gifford Eardley

$2.00

One hundred years ago, Brighton-1e-Sands was merely a sandy beach on the western shore of Botany Bay, while today it is a thickly populated bay suburb of Sydney.

The pioneer of Brighton-le-Sands was Mr. Thomas Saywell.

This man bought much land at Brighton and on portion of his land built a hotel which faced the bay and nearby he opened up a large pleasure park.

To connect these with the Illawarra Railway, he built a tramway between the bay and Rockdale Station which was opened to traffic in November 1885.

The Brighton-le-Sands tramway was the first line to be opened in the St. George district and was a very successful venture.

Length: 20 pages.
